Destination Profile - Guyana

Guyana is is an undiscovered gem for the natural history buff and adventure traveler. Comprised of tropical rainforests, mystical mountains, and rolling savannahs, it is home to over 700 species of birds, including the majestic Harpy Eagle and the Guyana Cock-of-the-Rock.  The Giant River otter, jaguars, and troops of howler monkeys can be heard deep in the rainforests.  There are many lodges and guest houses situated throughout the country which allow you to explore the natural environment in relative comfort.

You should include a visit to famous Kaieteur Falls, where 400 foot wide Potaro River plunges over the Pakaraima Plateau in a 741' single drop, forming one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world.  Other stunning sites include Orinduik Falls, the Marshall Falls, and Kaieteur Gorge.

For a chance to see the Giant River Otter, you will want to visit Karanambu Ranch.  There, you can observe the work of Diane McTurk in rehabilitating orphaned Giant River Otters to the wild, enjoy some extraordinary bird-watching, and fresh water fishing.

Dadanawa Ranch is the place to visit to search for Harpy Eagles. Excellent birdwatching, exploring Amerindian villages and petroglyphs, and horseback riding are all popular in this southern savannah region.

The Iwokrama Centre is responsible for the conservation and management of the 360,00 hectare Iwokrama forest.  It is located in the heart of Guyana, and offers private guest lodging. Considered one of the best sites on earth to see a jaguar in the wild, you can also hike to Turtle Mountain , look for Amerindian petroglyphs and observe the centre's projects for developing sustainable uses for tropical rain forest ecosystems.

Both Shanklands & Timberhead Rain Forest Resort, as well as Rock View Lodge offer comfortable accommodations with-in easy traveling distance of Georgetown.  From these lodges, you can hike, canoe, birdwatch, and explore the nearby Amerindian villages.

If you are looking for a unique destination with fabulous flora and fauna, then Guyana is a destination for you!
