Destination Profile - Bolivia
Bolivia Country Profile

We consider Bolivia to be the undiscovered gem of South America. It possesses the same diversity, charm and excitement as its Andean neighbors, but surpasses them in its untouched beauty and culture

Powerful mountain ranges offer endless trekking and mountain climbing options, while the altiplano (high-plains) cities of Sucre and Potosi are a wealth of colonial culture and history.

The Lake Titicaca region is surrounded by pre-Incan ruins and exceptional scenery, and located just a short drive from the capital city of La Paz. You'll be able to wander through the famous witchcraft market, as well as some other handicraft markets located in the city.

As with most Andean countries, you'll find Bolivia offers exceptional trekking on Incan and pre-Incan trails. Several of our treks offer the unique combination of starting at high elevations (15,000' and higher), but gradually descending into the sub-tropical Yungas region of lush tropical foliage and rushing streams.

For those looking for a "off the beaten path" natural history experience, you'll also find a lush wetlands area, tropical rainforests and remote salt flats full of unique flora and fauna.

Below, we've highlighted some of our more popular itineraries. Please keep in mind that most itineraries are flexible, and can be customized to suit your specific interests, vacation time, and budget.

Bolivia Cultural Trips--Insider's Bolivia is our most in-depth Bolivia trip, visiting La Paz, Lake Titicaca and surrounding highlights, as well as the remote and beautifully mysterious Uyuni Salt flats. Some hiking and wildlife viewing here, as well as an overnight in a hotel built entirely from salt bricks! A cultural visit to the silver mining capital of Potosi, a tour of colonial Sucre, and a visit to the Tarabuco market--the most authentic Indian market in Bolivia are all included. 14 days $2765.Bolivia Highlights is a shorter version focusing on the colonial cities and Lake Titicaca, and offers 9 days of sightseeing for $1350. For those short on time, or wishing to combine a visit to Bolivia with the highlights of Peru, we offer our Highlights of Peru and Bolivia --12-day trip comprehensive trip starting at $1685 per person. Short stopover packages in La Paz are also available to include with any South American itinerary.

Bolivia Adventure Trips--Trek the Takesi Trail, a pre-Incan trail that winds through Indian villages, along creeks and into the tropics. One of our most popular treks! Cost is $483 for 4 days, and includes your last night in a charming hosteria in the Yungas region. The Choro Inca Trail is another trip that starts high, and descends to the Yungas. A bit more difficult than the Takesi, and in a different region of the Andes, this trip is also 4 days, and costs $506. The Condoriri is a high altitude trek in the Cordillera Real. 3 days cost $255 per person. There are many longer trips--try our 10 day Illimani Circuit and Yunga Cruz Inca Trail, costing $987 for 10 days, or the Transandean Illampu Circuit, which is also 10 days, and costs $1055. Sea Kayaking on Lake Titicaca, river rafting, mountain biking, mountain climbing, and overland journeys are also available!

Bolivia Natural History Trips-- Chalalan Lodge is located in Madidi National Park--considered to be one of the largest and most biologically diverse regions of the Amazon. On this trip you will stay in basic hotels and lodges. Transportation to and from La Paz to this remote area is by plane, private boat, and hiking. 5 days $550 + air tickets w/in Bolivia

Our Ecological and Cultural Cruise on the Flotel Reina de Enin allows you to visit the wetlands area of the Beni region on this comfortable and active oriented program. Fly to and from Trinidad to take 4-day cruise. Cost is $485, with longer itineraries available on request.
